Pongal Recipe

Pongal is a delicious South Indian porridge like dish that is made with rice and yellow moong lentils. It can be made sweet or savory. Here I share the savory version of Pongal recipe known as Ven Pongal or Khara Pongal laced with the wonderful flavors of cumin, asafoetida, curry leaves, ginger and black pepper. Pongal Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice
  • 2 tablespoon ghee
  • 1 pinch asafoetida
  • 1 handful curry leaves
  • 5 cashews
  • Water as required
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 cup moong dal
  • Salt as required

Ven Pongal Recipe

Step 1

1. Heat 1 tsp ghee in a pressure cooker.

Step 2

2. Add ½ cup rice, ½ cup moong dal and sauté until aromatic.

Step 3

3. Add 4 cups water, ½ tsp salt, mix well, and pressure cook for 5 whistles.

Step 4

4. Once pressure releases, open the cooker and mix well.

Step 5

5. In a pan, heat 2 tbsp ghee, add cumin, pepper, ginger, chili, cashews, and hing.

Step 6

6. Pour the tempering over cooked rice and dal mixture.

Step 7

7. Mix well, add more ghee if needed, and serve with chutney and sambar.
